Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry in Northern Nigeria, plays a significant role in influencing societal norms and behaviors. Family planning is a critical public health issue in Nigeria, where high fertility rates and limited access to reproductive health services pose significant challenges (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2024). Kannywood films, with their cultural resonance and wide reach, have the potential to educate the public about family planning, breaking down taboos and encouraging informed decision-making. In Gombi Local Government Area, Adamawa State, leveraging films to promote family planning awareness can contribute to improved reproductive health outcomes and population management.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to promote family planning, many communities in Northern Nigeria remain resistant due to cultural, religious, and informational barriers. Kannywood films, known for addressing sensitive social issues, can play a pivotal role in overcoming these barriers. However, their effectiveness in educating the public about family planning in Gombi is yet to be systematically studied (Hassan & Abdullahi, 2023). This study seeks to fill this gap.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the themes of family planning in selected Kannywood films.
  2. To evaluate public perceptions of these films in Gombi.
  3. To assess the effectiveness of Kannywood films in promoting family planning awareness.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What family planning themes are portrayed in Kannywood films?
  2. How do audiences in Gombi perceive these portrayals?
  3. How effective are Kannywood films in promoting family planning awareness?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Kannywood films frequently address family planning themes.
  2. Audiences in Gombi positively perceive family planning messages in these films.
  3. Kannywood films effectively promote family planning awareness.
